Believe It Or Not, There Is A Long History Of Marketing Stunts In Space And Near Space.

Coca-Cola V Pepsi Space Race

image12

In the 80's, the space race was no longer between the United States and the Soviet Union, but Coca-Cola® and Pepsi®. These two brands battled each other for who would be the first soft drink consumed in space. Pepsi® spent $14 million dollars developing their beverage can; today that's worth over $33 million. (Don't worry, we cost much less than that. And you get a satellite, not a can!)

The specially engineered beverage cans flew on the shuttle Challenger in 1985. But the space rivalry didn't end there. In 1996 Coke® again sent their beverage to space on the shuttle Endeavour. Pepsi® responded by paying Russia for their Cosmonauts to pose with a 4 foot replica Pepsi® can during a space walk.

Pepsi® seemed to burst a bubble with Russian space advertising.  Pizza Hut®, RadioShack®, and an Israeli brand of milk followed suit and paid Russia for their own space marketing stunts.
